A view of the beach near Kilve where, in the 1920’s, there was an unsuccessful attempt to extract commercial quantities of oil and petrol from an oil bearing layer about 1000ft below the beach. The remains of a retort, used to extract the hydrocarbons by distillation, are still to be seen (2017) below the car park at Kilve beach.
